This activity is great for demonstrating the technology and processes we use when dealing with an oil spill. Can be a little messy, so take some precautions!
Materials: (Per group)
3 Plastic Spoons
3 Cotton Balls
3 Gauze Pads
3 Craft Sticks
3 Plastic Cups
Oil (Sunflower, Olive, Vegetable)
Skimming: ~10 min
Absorbtion: ~10 min
Dispersant: ~10 min

Grade Level: 2nd-8th
Determine which method(s) is best for cleaning oil
Actual Practice (show how the processes are preformed in real life)
This activity can be turned into a design challenge by adjusting the OBJECTIVE. By giving students a set of materials (each with determined price), they have to budget their plan to remove as much oil as possible. SCORING is usually determined by the amount of oil collected.
My activity is a modification of the plans found here: https://www.teachengineering.org/view_lesson.php?url=collection/cub_/lessons/cub_enveng/cub_enveng_lesson01.xml
